All of the students were smart and delightful and seemed to like the program a lot. As for UCLA, we very much enjoyed hosting them. It took the first couple of weeks to get all the students to be less shy about speaking, but by the end all of us became very close and they each gave a short but touching speech to the Dean at the graduation ceremony. He was very impressed. Of all the students, 旺A and 旺B were the most perfect for the program, in that they worked a bit harder than the others on the academic segments. They are fine students, and I offered to write letters of recommendation for both of them if they still remember me in two years and decide to attend American Universities.
It was a very intense three weeks. We are going to wait about a week at this end, then we will start thinking about how the program can be improved. We have lots of feedback from the students, but we would welcome any feedback from the parents as well. One problem is that the academic content is what the parents want the most, while the students much prefer the recreational activities. We have to find a good balance.
Also, we had some feedback from China that some parents would like courses for credit. While this is not impossible at UCLA, we felt that the students while probably academically capable of understanding a lot of the material, do not yet have enough English comprehension to understand many of our faculty teaching courses with academic terminology and speaking at their normal rate of speech. We were very impressed with all the students, most of whom were 9th graders, but with the exception of 旺A and 旺B who are extremely serious academically, that might be a little young for many students to really be ready to be thinking seriously about their university choices.
Thanks again for finding such outstanding students. We were impressed.. 作者: tony-mama 时间: 2012-9-2 18:18
